General Objective:


1.0 Students should apply the role of algebraic techniques in solving problems in real life situation.



Specific Objectives

Students should be able to:


1.1 compute operations involving additions with symbols and numbers after worked examples from the teachers.

1.2 
compute operations involving subtractions with symbols and numbers after worked examples from the teachers.




Worked examples from teachers


Example 1:  Transpose 10 = u + 3 for u.   

Solution:

Subtracting 3 from both sides of the formula, we get
10 – 3 = u + 3 – 3
i.e. 10 – 3 = u
7 = u
Rewriting the formula, we get
u = 7



Example 2:  Transpose 20 = 9 + m  for  m.

Solution:

Subtracting 9 from both sides of the formula, we get
20 – 9 = m + 9 – 9
i.e. 20 – 9 = m
11 = m
Rewriting the formula, we get
m = 11



Example 3:  Transpose 30 = a - 1 for a.    

Solution:

Adding  1 from both sides of the formula, we get
30 + 1 = a - 1 + 1
i.e. 30 + 1 = a
31 = a
Rewriting the formula, we get
a = 31



Example 4:  Transpose 50 = z - 40 for z.  

Solution:

Adding  40 from both sides of the formula, we get
50 + 40 = z - 40 + 40
i.e. 50 + 40 = z
90 = z
Rewriting the formula, we get
z = 90


Example 5:  Transpose 70 = - 50 + q for q.        

Solution:

Adding  50 from both sides of the formula, we get
70 + 50 = q - 50 + 50
i.e. 70 + 50 = q
120 = q
Rewriting the formula, we get
q = 120

Students complete these questions in your notebooks.


Exercise 1:  Transpose  30 = 15 + P   for P.



Exercise 2:  Transpose  300 = J + 70   for J.



Exercise 3: Transpose  100 = M – 50  for M



Exercise 4: Transpose  500 =  – 250 + K  for K
